What’s on my mind this week.
August 14th, 2008 by OktaneWhat a while it has been. This week, well today specifically, I’m headed to an interview in less than hour and then I’ve got our first performance since March to look forward to. Yet, this is what sits heavy in my mind.
As time goes on, we’re constantly reminded of the upcoming election. McCain vs. Obama, what’s going on in Iraq, the oil crisis… you get the picture. However, as is my style, I think of the effects of the election on society.
Let’s first focus on the Democratic Party’s primaries.
As a whole, would you think that the United States is more racist or more sexist?
Though something not necessarily comparable, this question has plagued me for quite sometime. Does it affect me more being white or female?
This question was, in fact, answered by the party’s decision to put up Barack Obama as the presidential candidate. Though straying from the tradition of nominating a white male, females will not run the country for (most likely) another 12 years.
But really, is it that surprising?
Slaves were granted freedom, the right to own property and the right to vote before women.
Think about it.
But what we really need to ask, is does it matter? Just so long as we see ourselves progressing as a society beyond issues of sex and race.
I see it as the fact that it’s NOT going to happen.
